Spotlight on Sponsors Fall 2024

Joanna Cox, pictured here with her two daughters, recently retired from a 33-year career as a Nurse Practitioner at the Veteran’s Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

She has sponsored Sudharsan’s education for the last seven years and also supports The Hybrid Learning Project and The School Fund with monthly donations.

“What is important in life?” That is what Joanna Cox asks herself when deciding how to spend her time and resources.

Back in December of 2017, when her nephew Mason Adams told her about Aruna Partnership, she went on the Aruna Partnership website to take a look. What she saw impressed her. She had recently watched a film called “Daughters of Destiny”, about five girls from impoverished backgrounds who attend the Shanti Bhavan school in Tamil Nadu, India. This inspired her to sign up to become a sponsor.

Seven years later, her student, Sudharsan, is entering the 11th grade. He writes wonderful letters to her, expressing his gratitude to Joanna and his appreciation of his grandmother with whom he lives. “I enjoy hearing about life in his village,” Joanna says. “I love hearing about how he is doing.”

Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida, as the daughter of an Episcopal priest, Joanna knows well about service to others. Her work as a Nurse Practitioner also showed her how important caring relationships are. She is a strong proponent of education and worked with clients as a Nurse Practitioner to educate them about their health issues.

When I asked about her philosophy of life, she said, “It’s important to show kindness and love to other people. I’m not all about service to others 24 hours a day. I take care of myself and do self-care and read and relax, but I think it’s very important to be present for my friends and my family. Covid made that so crystal clear, too – what fell away were superficial relationships.”

When Covid hit, Joanna signed up to make monthly donations to The Hybrid Learning Project because she knew that access to online learning is so important. She is also supporting The School Fund with monthly donations.

Joanna takes yoga and Pilates classes, works with a personal trainer to life weights, and goes hiking with friends on the weekends. She is also a big presence in the lives of her three grandchildren. Now that she is retired, she’s planning to go on lots of adventures with the 11-year old twins this summer.

She feels a true connection with Sudharsan and knows she’s making a difference in his life.

“Education is where it’s at,” says Joanna. “I was so happy to hear about your organization and all that you do for people in those communities.”
