Focus on Design

Interview with Pat Towler, co-owner of Common Crow Natural Market in Gloucester, MA

For Common Crow, the story behind Aruna Designs is the heart of why we sell these handcrafts. In India, poor widows are shunned, often even by their own families who believe that they brought "bad karma" to their husbands. Learning a trade can slowly restore their sense of dignity and give them hope. Sales provide young widows with a living wage, free medical care, and education for their children.

Collection of crafts

In choosing a company or a product line to sell, we're looking for the most benefit for everyone.

Customers buying from us want to express their values through their choices. It's meaningful to them to know that a potholder they use in their kitchen has put food on the table for a family in need.

People are hungry for connection. We want to connect through our choices.

Part of the appeal of Aruna Designs kitchen accessories is the knowledge that handweaving is a rare practice these days. This makes these objects, whether they're potholders, hand towels, napkins or aprons, very special.

As an experienced retailer, I've observed that the effort it takes to do a manufacturing process correctly, even if it costs more, is definitively worth it in a world where so little attention is paid to the hands that make the objects we count on every day.

There are a lot of stuffed animals and bathrobes in the world, and many places to buy them. Our customers trust that we have chosen fairly traded, high quality goods for this store.

The excellence of Aruna's product line ends up benefitting the women artisans because you get a very dedicated audience when customers recognize the high quality of the designs, fabrics, and construction of Aruna's products.

These handcrafts have energy, just like all things do, an energy that comes from the makers. Aruna Designs handcrafts are playful and joyful.

The best sellers are the Block Print Robes. They fit everybody, each print is unique, they make fantastic gifts and are very well made. All shoppers have to do is see the robes, because they are so beautiful and easy to love!
